Bullying rises 43% in the last few years.

Harassment at work or “mobbing” has increased by 43% in the last few years representing more than 2.5 million people.

The current economic crisis means we are in difficult times in terms of finding work, but for some, it is also very difficult to keep their job without suffering some kind of harassment.

It is true that we are in a free market economy, and as such, the law of supply and demand is what drives everything including the job market. The demand for labor is far lower than the supply of labour and that means, the employer is holding all the cards.

Not that any employer is purposefully harrassing its workers, it is just that in the current economic climate, they are more likely to get away with it because workers NEED their jobs more and are unlikely to speak up or quit because they are afraid of losing their gainful employment.

The barometer research, prepared by the Institute of Management Development and Educational Innovation, points out that 70% of cases have been initiated in the last year “resulting from the crisis.”

While in the past, the majority of harrasment taking place in the workplace was directed at women, surprisingly, in the current circumstances, the main subject of harassment is no longer women.

The economic crisis has exacerbated workplace pressure techniques, to have staff perform at higher levels of productivity, to produce more sales, work longer hours, take on more tasks and otherwise have greater expectations of employees than in the past; and it is how employers treat their employees while ‘asking for more’ from them that is causing the increase in harassment cases.

A great post about workplace harassment from a human rights perspective was posted earlier in 2011 at humanrightseachday.com

Earlier we posted about a test that allowed us to determine whether or not we were workaholics? Today we continue that discussion, specifically about the negatives of being a workaholic and how it directly relates to other addictions such as alcohol or drugs.

Mario Lebanon, a researcher at the University Jaume I of Castellan, and colleagues at the University of Utrecht have clearly identified the nature of this addiction-related disease demonstrating the negative results of workaholism including an indication that the greater the level of addiction the greater the decrease in happiness and health that these people have.

Their research refutes the thoughts of a few years ago, when it was believed that a total and absolute, almost obsessive commitment to employment was positive and related to high productivity.

The results of this workaholism study that came up with the profile of a workaholic were obtained through the examination of the behavior of 2714 workers, of which 2164 were Spanish, and another 550 were from the Netherlands. In the study, the profile of workaholic is formed from two criteria: excessive Work and pleasure.

In the first case these are people who can not stop working and if they do, they feel anxious and guilty. They spend 50 hours a week in the office, do two jobs at the same time, come out first and often last release or go regularly to the job on weekends and holidays.

These are people are most often between 35 and 45, their jobs carry high levels of responsibility and require the execution of high level skilled tasks. This profile does not know what to do if their work runs out and make sure they always have something to work at steadily. The feelings they experience when work is slow are very similar to that of withdrawal symptoms from drug addiction.

But besides all this, there is the view of the disengagement and pleasure, in the words of Jose Maria Vazquez-Roel, head of Capistrano center specializing in the treatment of addictions, “These are people with features that offer a chance to grow, to enhance creativity, to learn, develop, evolve, features all very exciting and with a high addictive potential burden. Keep in mind that, like any addictive chemical substance, this activity provides pleasure, relief, disconnected from the real world, like compulsive gamblers .

A felon is anyone who commits a felony and has been convicted of the crime. Felony offenses can be punishable with a wide range of penalties, ranging from at least a year of imprisonment to death. For felons who complete their sentences and are released, several jobs and career fields offer opportunities for productive work.

Long-Distance Hauling

As long as a felon has a driver’s license, most long-distance hauling companies are willing to hire him. Long-distance driving is also an excellent way for felons to see the United States, as many hauling assignments cover thousands of miles. Many veteran drivers have traveled over a million miles in the course of their jobs.

Mercenary/Private Military Companies

Private military companies hire felons to work as contractors providing security for corporations, diplomats and journalists. Mercenaries generally do private battlefield work in areas such as Iraq. Since the most recent wars in the Middle East, the demand for private military services has increased. One PMC is ArmorGroup International, which has been established for 25 years and provides security services to national governments, international companies and worldwide security agencies in hostile environments.

Offshore Drilling

Another industry that hires felons is oil drilling. Oil drilling is a career field that has high-paying jobs, and workers are often in high demand. Many offshore drilling or oil rig jobs are in the Gulf of Mexico and off the coast of Alaska. Oil rig jobs generally consist of a 14/21-day rotation, which means that workers are on the rig for 14 days and then have 21 days off.

Retail

Though some retail companies will not hire felons, many will. Felons are more likely to find work in the retail field if they were not charged with violent or burglary-related offenses. High-end stores and popular shopping malls, where demand for workers is high, are more likely to hire felons than smaller or discount stores.

Everybody dreams of having an easy, stress-free job. While a list of the least stressful jobs can be subjective, certain criteria, such as freedom to work with limited supervision and on your own schedule, can help make a job seem less like work. While most jobs carry some stress, a job that gives you personal satisfaction and freedom and allows you to do something you enjoy can result in a less stressful career.

Web Designer or Graphic Artist

While web designers and graphic artists work hard, they are typically using talents they enjoy. This in part leads to the lower stress factor. In many instances, jobs have deadlines months away, allowing web designers to work independently and on their own schedules. According to a CNN Money poll of web designers, 58 percent consider the job low stress. Another contributing factor to the low-stress aspect of this career, according to the poll, is that “companies tend to reward the website creators with parties and other freebies.”

Food Truck Service

Food truck operators spend the day driving from one business location to the next. This is ideal for people who love to be on the road. Operating a food service truck can be a low-stress way to earn a living while being your own boss. Driving an ice cream truck is similarly low-stress. A Careercast poll states that “the ability to set your own hours and work alone” are two of the highest contributing factors for low stress in this career.

Review or Technical Writer

If you have writing skills and love to test and review products, writing technical manuals or reviewing a variety of products are two jobs that are low stress. The ability to spend time working without a boss is one of the factors that leads to the low stress level. Additionally, there’s the benefit of testing new products, many of which you get to keep. A lot of technical writers and reviewers work from home as well, allowing for a more relaxed work environment. According to a CNN Money report, technical writing rates 88 as one of the top 100 jobs to have.

Game Tester

Testing and reviewing games for the big gaming console companies can be a fun, relaxing way to earn a living. In addition to testing for bugs and making suggestions for improvement, many testers write reviews for the games. This is a job where you can stay at home and work in your pajamas all day. A CNN poll of game testers notes that “it’s easier to relax at your desk when your job mirrors what you would normally do for fun.”

Baker

Many people bake to relax. If you have baking talents, a part-time job working in a bakery is considered one of the lowest stress level jobs in America. Besides the relaxed environment and the ability to do something you enjoy, the soothing aromas of baked goods can help keep you focused and feeling good.

Librarian

Working in a library is an ideal job for someone who loves books. According to a Careercast 2010 survey, “the work environment in a library is typically casual, placing books on shelves and checking customers out in a quiet environment.” Libraries are not known for hectic activity.

Janitor

Working as a janitor, particularly on a third shift where there is no one else around, is usually quiet and stress free. Many companies hire single employees to service one location, which allows you to be your own boss and work at your own pace. Third-shift janitor work is quiet. You can put on a pair of headphones and work at your own pace.

Amusement Park Operator

Working a summer job in a concession booth or as a ride operator can be both fun and low stress. These jobs are usually handled by college students or even high school students as a way to earn money while having the freedom to continue their studies.

Tour Escort

If you enjoy working around people and have good communication skills, being a tour guide is a job that requires very little training and has a low level of stress. Tour guides at parks and in caves, or even a speaker at a zoo, are all jobs that fall into this category.

Massage Therapist

Not only does a massage therapist earn a decent living, the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates this is a growing field in 2010. While some training is required, a certification can be earned in as little as two months. Many massage therapists work less than 40 hours a week and work in relaxing, quiet environments.

A web design business is a business in which you design websites for individuals and companies. Web design involves a combination of some graphic design knowledge as well as programming skills.

Instructions

Set up a website for your business. You will want to advertise your skills and your personal website can essentially be an online portfolio. You will want to make sure your own website is a great example of a professional site so potential clients can see just what you can do. Mention your rates and the programming languages you can work in (HTML, CSS, javascript, etc.) so that potential customers will know if you have the type of skills they are looking for. You’ll also want to make sure you make the language understandable to a lay person, for example by mentioning on your potential website that your knowledge of javascript allows you to create responsive website forms that customers can fill out.

Set your rates. Your website should contain these rates so customers won’t be surprised. You can get your rates either hourly or charge a set fee per page or per site. To find out how much to charge, compare the rates of other website designers. Remember, though, if you have no experience you may need to start by charging slightly lower rates until you build up a portfolio of clients and work.

Advertise your services. There are a number of ways to do this. You can bid on projects where people are looking for online website designers. You can attempt to drive traffic to your website by creating a lot of helpful information on website creation that a person might find when searching for a web designer. You can place targeted ads on other web pages advertising your services. You can also cold-call or email companies offering your services.

Write up contracts for service. If someone hires you, you’ll need to decide how they are going to pay you and when. You should specify whether they will send you a check or pay you via Paypal or an online method. Specify whether payments is due in installments or upon completion of the project. Specify the length of time they have to pay; for example, if they plan to pay upon approving the website, have your contract stipulate that they must approve and pay within 30 days. This contract will protect you in case someone decides not to pay after you have done the work.

Track your income and expenses for tax purposes. If you are running your own business, you will need to declare all the income you receive on your taxes using a Schedule C form. Some clients who pay you may send you a 1099 misc, but in other cases you will simply need to report the income. You may also need to pay estimated quarterly taxes based on your projected income by April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15 since the IRS requires you to pay taxes as you go.

As most people have found, working 40 hours per week or more can bring on a lot of stress into one’s life. Working that much and being in the wrong field can add to that stress even more so. Beyond that, there are some jobs, even jobs certain people love to do, that are hands down the most stressful jobs in America.

Real Estate Agents

One of the top 10 most stressful jobs in America is that of a real estate agent. Real estate agents can work a lot of hours that vary from day to day. They also must be very good with people, for most of their work will require them to show the property they are selling to their clients. Combining those two issues with the competitiveness of the real estate market makes this job one of the most stressful jobs in America.

Advertising Executive

Advertising executives, much like real estate agents, also work odd and irregular hours. Most of the stress associated with this job pertains to emotional and mental stress of working those odd hours and managing large accounts. Advertising executives also must meet deadlines and pay close attention to detail, which adds even more to their stress.

Public Relations Officer

One of the biggest fears many people share is speaking in front of people. Public relations officers are required to make speeches and presentations in front of large crowds and often must deal with and interact with opposing members of the media.

Highway Patrol Officer

Highway patrol officers have a lot working against them when it comes to stress. From working holidays, late nights and weekends, to high-speed chases and life-threatening situations, highway patrol officers deal with stress from all angles. Because of the physical and mental stamina, and the attention to detail that is required, the job of a highway patrol officer is one of the top 10 most stressful jobs in America.

Commercial Pilot

If you have ever traveled and flown over multiple time zones, then you probably understand what jet lag is. Now imagine that flying is your full-time job. As a commercial pilot, you must work odd hours, flying multiple routes, dealing with layovers, and subsequently jet lag. On top of that, you must also arrive on time, regardless of the weather, and insure the safety and comfort of everyone on board. It’s all of these factors that makes the job of a commercial pilot on of the top 10 most stressful jobs in America.

Police Officer

Police officers are often confronted with life-threatening situations on a daily basis. Their shifts can be long and require them to deal with emergencies that call for physical and mental endurance. They also must work with the public and occasionally provide medical attention to injured people.

Surgeon

For surgeons, a day at the office requires them to deal with multiple life and death situations per shift. Many of the surgeries they perform require immense precision and fast decision making. They also must deal with the fact that if they mess up a surgery, they can often be sued for malpractice. To top it off, surgeons work long hours.

Taxi Driver

Imagine being confined to a vehicle for long hours of the day and having to deal with a carousel of people coming in and out of your car. That’s the life of a taxi driver. Not only do they work long hours, but they often have to deal with dangerous traffic and bad weather on a daily basis. Taxi drivers also carry large sums of money, making them a target for criminals.

Corporate Executive

Corporate executives have an immense amount of responsibility to deal with. They must stay on top of financial knowledge, economic trends and other developments. They also must deal with the stress that their decisions can often effect not only a large number of the employees under them, but also the companies overall bottom line.

Firefighter

Firefighters must work long and odd hours and are often on call throughout the night. While on the job, they risk heat exhaustion, serious injury and sometimes their lives. Firefighters usually work outdoors, in bad weather, and fighting out of control fires.

Mechanical engineering careers require creativity, great communication skills and attention to details. Mechanical engineering involves designing and repairing any equipment and machinery with moving parts such as engines, toys and drills. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), careers in mechanical engineering are expected to increase one to six percent from 2008 to 2018.

Mechanical Engineer

Mechanical engineers use engineering theories and principles to find solutions to technical problems. Typically, they develop, maintain and improve mechanical devices such as tools other engineers use. Mechanical engineers may oversee daily operations and supervise engineering staff. Supervising mechanical engineers are responsible for all aspects of projects. Mechanical engineers need at least a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. In every state and the District of Columbia, a license may be required for mechanical engineers who work directly with the public. In 2008, the median annual salary for mechanical engineers was $74,920.

Mechanical Engineering Technician

Mechanical engineering technicians work under the direction of engineering staff to assist with designing, developing, testing and manufacturing machinery and equipment. Typically, the equipment includes consumer products, tools and industrial machinery. They create hand drawn sketches and layouts of equipment during the planning production phase. Mechanical engineering technicians report their findings to the engineering staff. Usually, this report includes data analysis, plant space and equipment calculations. Also, they estimate the cost of labor and how long the equipment will last. Mechanical engineering technicians assist with product testing, which include inspecting machines, setting up the machines and recording any production problems. Educational requirements include at least an associate’s degree in engineering technology. The median annual salary in 2008 for mechanical engineering technicians was $48,130.

Mechanical Engineering Technologist

Mechanical engineering technologists use engineering theory to assist engineers in designing, developing and testing consumer products and machinery. They oversee, inspect and monitor the installation of mechanical projects. Also, mechanical engineering technologists assemble or disassemble mechanical systems and test products to determine their durability, performance and stress response. The technologists conduct statistical studies and prepare reports. Education requirements may include at least an associate’s degree. The median annual salary for mechanical engineering technologists in 2009 was $57,530.

While there probably aren’t many jobs that are 100 percent stress-free, there are certainly some jobs that are less stressful than others. Whether you’re contemplating a career change or deciding which career path to take, it’s important to think about how your career will affect the overall quality of your life. Stress can be directly linked to numerous health and mental conditions, so a career with a small amount of stress can be beneficial in many ways.

Jobs That Make a Difference

The most rewarding jobs are those that allow you to make a difference in the world or in the lives of others, hence the lower amount of stress.

Special education teachers are generally very satisfied with their jobs according to a University of Chicago study. In fact, this study found that more than 70 percent of these teachers responded positively when asked whether they were very satisfied with their jobs.

Physical therapists were also extremely satisfied with their jobs, as 78 percent of physical therapists replied positively to the question. Physical therapists often work with patients who have sustained injuries to specific parts of their bodies and must strengthen those parts in order to function normally.

Individuals with careers in the clergy have also been found to be very satisfied with their jobs. Spirituality plays a role here and has been connected to stress relief. Spirituality gives people a sense of purpose or meaning and allows them to release more control of problems rather than trying to carry them all on their shoulders.

Psychologists answered that they were very satisfied in their jobs in the same University of Chicago study. Psychologists help patients overcome emotional problems or barriers through the use of conversation and reflection, along with many other tools.

Low-Risk Jobs

Risk nearly always involves stress. For instance, when a surgeon operates on a patient, there is a risk of severe injury or even death. Jobs that are very low-risk often cause less stress.

Librarians are typically in quiet, peaceful settings where there is zero risk other than the possibility of a paper cut. Most librarians have a love of books, which means they’re surrounded by things they enjoy. This creates a more positive work environment and reduces stress.

Musical instrument repair workers have a similarly low level of risk in their jobs, as do piano tuners. Both of these jobs are typically quiet jobs performed in environments that are peaceful and soothing.

Jobs Related to The Arts

Artistic jobs tend to be therapeutic and rarely stressful. In fact, many professionals recommend art therapy for stress relief. For this reason, individuals who are able to make a living with their art tend to be less stressed than others.

Painters, sculptors, crafters, illustrators, and similar artists are able to find self-expression in their jobs, which reduces stress. It should be noted that popular artists such as musicians, actors, and authors who are high demand can often be more stressed than others. With touring dates, deadlines, and other demands, these would not be classified as low-stress careers.
